Swedish Orient Line (SOL) will begin investigating potential new ways to expand the use of inland waterways to build a new, environmentally friendly container shuttle between Gothenburg and Kristinehamn.

This will be the first inland waterway based solution and aims to change the transport and logistic market.

The business model is based upon frequency, precision and cargo capacity, with two sailings per week in each direction planned.

At first it is planned that the service would ship from eastern Värmland (Möckeln area), western Örebro region and south Dalarna.

Customers in the timber, wood, paper and mining industries are there with requirements for export of goods and local and national retailers have the need of capacity for the import of their goods.

Ragnar Johansson, Managing Director of Swedish Orient Line, noted: “We see that the future belongs to those willing to take responsibility and understand the value of an active environmentally friendly solution to today’s problems. We believe that we can be at the forefront and offer a system for a new sea based solution that is able to challenge the present market”.
