India must focus on methanol over diesel, says Transport Minister

Indian minister for Road Transport and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari, said that India must use pollution-free methanol as fuel, in an effort to minimize pollution.

Speaking in particular at the second day of ‘Sagar Discourse’, currently underway in South Goa, Mr. Gadkari referred to Sweden, which is switching to methanol over diesel.

In a bid to reduce pollution at sea, the government has started discussions with engine manufacturers to make bio-fuel compliant engines for ships, Mr. Gadkari was quoted as saying by Economic Times.

Namely, India seeks to discourage road traffic and support water transport instead, investing USD 50-60 billion in creating 40 river ports with three-metre draft and a river traffic control on the lines of air traffic control.
