According to IMO, a PSSA should meet three key elements: the area must have recognised heritage or scientific attributes; the recognised attributes of the area must be at risk and there must be associated protective measures adopted by IMO.

New WWF guide helps ships avoid vulnerable Arctic species

A new WWF-Canada guide, aiming to help mariners in the Hudson Strait to identify and avoid marine mammals, is being unveiled at a Canadian Coast Guard and Transport Canada meeting in Montreal. The Hudson Strait Mariner’s Guide is made up of two large posters to be hung on the ship’s bridge: a chart that will help mariners identify mammals and maps of marine mammal habitat in both summer and winter.

IEA tracks shipping industry’s progress on clean energy

For the shipping industry, IEA estimates that ‘’implementing IMO’s final GHG strategy only by 2023 will have very little impact on the possibility of meeting 2025 2°C targets (2DS)’’.

52 workers were killed during shipbreaking in 2016

NGO Shipbreaking Platform issued its annual report, informing that last year, at least 52 workers lost their lives on the shipbreaking beaches in South Asia. The worst explosion in the history of shipbreaking struck an oil tanker beached in Gadani, Pakistan, killing 28 workers and injuring more than 60.

IMO urged to extend GHG strategy

BIMCO, IPTA and World Shipping Council (WSC) have jointly submitted a proposal to IMO suggesting issues for consideration at the forthcoming MEPC in developing the greenhouse gas strategy. The document proposes programmes and obligations designed to improve the near-term and long-term efficiency of international shipping in furtherance of the IMO GHG strategy.

New report highlights impacts of ice melting

A new report issued by the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme, warns that even if the world manages to keep global warming below the targeted 2°C threshold, some of the Arctic shifts, resulting from climate change, could be permanent. By 2030, the Arctic Ocean may be ice-free, pushing seas to more extreme heights.
